Ace Combat: Assault Horizon

Rating:
Release Date: 14-10-2011

Now you can legitimately be Maverick's wingman. Except he's not in this game. But it's the same principle. Don't be so picky.

It's been a while since Ace Combat flew overhead and plumped some bombs on us. We've missed it dearly, so we were quite pleased when Assault Horizon was air-dropped in on a supply crate. SARGE WAS BEGINNING TO LOSE IT...

Alright, enough of that.

Ace Combat, if you didn't know, is quite a well established arcade-style flight combat series of games, and they're usually pretty good too. How does Assault Horizon fare? Pretty dang well, and we're not saying that just because we know the kind of weaponry they've got access to.

Normally set in a make believe world that closely resembles earth, but never actually was (probably because of TERRORISTS), AC:AH actually takes place on our fair planet, and has a generous selection of cities all over the world to visit. You will fight over Miami, Washington, Dubai, Paris, East Africa, the Middle East and Moscow. You will fly a variety of planes, helicopters, even a stealth bomber, and use many, many different types of weaponry. YOU WILL ENJOY IT, TOO. More effort has also been put into the story and character development this time around, so you can become even more immersed in your Top Gun fantasty!

The graphics are not to be sniffed at, having used satallite imagery to map real-life locations, you can pick out the tiniest detail while in the sky, from well known landmarks to individual houses. The ground clarity suffers slightly when you're in a fighter jet, but looks beautiful when you get closer in a chopper. Music and sound effects pull you even further into the mix thanks to tunes switching to suit the mood, and satisfying, chunky gunfire and explosions.

The best thing about the Ace Combat series is that they've just been damn good fun. Forget realism. Who needs realism when you're flying upside down in a dogfight, shooting bogies out your nose- er... we mean sky (TEEHEE), all while singing Highway to the Dangerzone. Assault Horizon doesn't let us down on that front... even some of the less involved missions when you're a Black Hawk door gunner or protecting a convoy using artillery shells are just so enjoyable, you'd go straight out and sign up with Uncle Sam if bullets weren't really your only weakness.

Do YOU like guns, planes and explosions? Of course you do. Get Ace Combat: Assault Horizon today. It's what you've been waiting for.

America, fuck yeah!
