Alma is back... and boy is she pissed!
Think about it, you would be too, right? Having been tortured and experimented on as a child, having her children taken away from her and treated like lab-rats, and NOW she's in labour?! We'd get a taxi home, no amount of gas and air is gonna cool her down!
Things are a little bit different this time around, while Point Man (our hero from the first game) is back behind the gun, his brother Paxton is also available to play, either in co-op (which is fantastic) or in singleplayer once you have completed the level as Point Man. If you've followed the story up to now, then yes, Paxton is dead, but that isn't going to stop him.
The game's atmosphere and graphics are spot on, thanks in part to getting the man who made Condemned so creepy (Frank Rooke - genius) on board. There are numerous moments which will make you yelp in fright as you traverse the sprawling and open levels,
The enemy AI is impressive; they work extremely well together, communicating and utilising cover in ways that will make you go "DAMNIT WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?" after getting flanked for the 5th time in a gunfight. Combat is chunky and satisfying, popping heads in slo-mo is way more enjoyable than it should be.
Gameplay is smooth and fluid, but we get the feeling it would be slightly more enjoyable on PC than on console... but once you get used to it, you won't give things a second thought.
Multiplayer modes, apart from the aforementioned co-op, are present, correct and a whole heap of terrifying fun. Soul King has you collecting souls from soldiers, some of which you will lose if you are killed. The player with the most souls wins. Sounds very religious right? Trust us, it's not. Soul Survivor sees one player with a corrupted soul at the beginning of the map setting out to corrupt the others, while the un-corrupted players must work together in order to survive. Contractions will put you under fire from wave after wave of enemies, each wave increasing in difficulty. You must build up your stronghold inbetween waves to survive the next one. Tactics and forward planning will see you succeed in this one! Our particular favourite, however, is called 'Fucking Run', where you do exactly that. There is a giant wall of death that chases you through the level while you are under attack from enemies. Players must again work together, because if any one of you gets caught by the wall, it's game over for everyone.
All in all, F.E.A.R. 3 is the game that fans of the original F.E.A.R. have been waiting for. It won't make you sleep with the light on, but there definitely are times when you'll scream for your mummy.
