Amazingly, the premise behind WW2 'shooter' is based on a TRUE story. You star as an Irish racing car driver who's caught behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied France. You hate Nazis, you enjoy speed (of the 'racing' variety), can handle guns, and are A-Team-style efficient at the old espionage, disguisin' lark.
This explains why you mix up all that Nazi blasting with haring around Parisian streets in a shiny racing car. But this ain't the TRUTH, man. It's told in comic-book over-the-topness, abetted by the fact you regenerate health like an X-Man, and the visuals are stylish black-white with splashes of colour that's a little bit like The Great Escape meets Sin City.
With atmospheric Paris settings, dramatic cut-scenes and a rousing blend of gameplay styles, The Saboteur is one of those inventive old skool adventures that you can't help but enjoy. Sure, the stealth elements aren't brilliantly implemented and the driving feels clunky, but flaws, strangely, don't seem to deter from the overall enjoyment. It reminds us of The Godfather games in that respect.
