If 2008 was the 'Year of Gore', 2009 is shaping up to be the 'Year of More Gore' - that's if F.E.A.R. 2 is anything to go by. A Rainbow Six-style military shooter trying to be a John Carpenter flick, it taps into every horror gaming cliche going: freaky ghost girls, surgical experimentation, fountains of splatter and a pompous orchestreal score to soundtrack your descent into virtual hell.

It may be less effective as an icy chiller, but it's a furious, well-crafted action blast. And it packs a meaty punch in multiplayer, too. Loud, brassy midnight frolicking that's highly recommended.
