WHAT'S IT ABOUT? NYPD Blue debuted on US TV screens in 1993 and came with a ready-made pedigree. The show's producer - Steven Bochco - had given the world Hill Street Blues in the '80s and NYPD was a similarly gritty cop show set on the mean streets of the Big Apple. It focused on Detective John Kelly (David Caruso) and his partner Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz), one a tightly-wound ladies' man going through a messy divorce, the other a booze-addled veteran whose life and career were falling apart.
ANY GOOD? This six-disc collection sees the show at the height of its powers, with Kelly taking on the mob after Sipowicz is gunned down in an unsuccessful murder attempt. It's explosive, gripping stuff with Caruso oozing Steve McQueen levels of glacial cool.
ANYTHING ELSE? Caruso left the show at the beginning of its second series, but NYPD Blue continued regardless and is now into its tenth year in the States.
PLENTY OF EXTRAS? As well as 22 episodes of the show, you get six commentaries, cast biographies and three featurettes, including a 'Making Of...' documentary.
