The 'mini' Brian Clough biopic - based on David Peace's superb book - divided the Maxim office into two camps. There were those who'd read the book and found Clough's portrayal too light-humoured, shallow and compassionate (THREE STARS) and those who hadn't read the book, who just thought it was a right uplifting footy flick that kicked-off brilliantly, but tailed off around the half-time mark (FOUR STARS).
Either way, biopic king Michael Sheen is spot-on as the gobby managerial legend Brian Clough, who, after leading small-timers Derby County to the Division One title, replaces Don Revie at Leeds United - the 'bruisers' he'd spent years slating. Inevitably, he falls flat on his royal arse and is sacked after a miserable 44 days.
The film's screenwriter said he wanted to divert attention away from Clough's alleged alcoholism (to which he claims there was little proof from this period), and focus on the importance of partnerships - in this case, Cloughie's bond with his number two Peter Taylor, ably played by Timothy Spall.
Whatever you look at it, there probably hasn't been a more fun footy flick since Escape To Victory. And that had John Wark in it...
RESULT: FOUR STARS (and no, I haven't read the book...)
