Isn't it ace to sometimes forget about Hollywood's salacious fripperies and settle down to a well acted, credibly written British film with a quality cast and a storyline that's both engaging and relevant to most of its audience? It should happen more often really.
It doesn't though, so when stuff like Shifty comes along, you really do have to embrace it.
Shifty (played by Riz Ahmed) who lends his * to the film's title, is a coke dealer heading for a fall. And not the type of fall where you cut your knee and damage your new jeans. Rather, the type of fall that leads to savage beatings and long jail sentences.
The film also stars one of our favourite young Brit actors, Daniel Mays, as Shifty's re-emerging best mate. The script is sharp and underplayed. The characters, three-dimensional and perceptive. The setting, bleak and real. And the whole thing ticks along rather intensely till its ace finalé.
We liked it. And would recommend it.
