Convoy (1978)
the 70s American fascination with trucker speak and the irresponsible 'give 'em the fucking finger' fantasies of the era makes Convoy as rewatchable as an internet mpeg of Gok Wan getting his ballsack torn off
The plot: Convoy follows a cannonball run of anti-law American truckers, spearheaded by the legendary Rubber Duck (Kris Kirstofferson), on a mission to drive fast, jump roadblocks and communicate in jumbled CB semantics whilst shitting on every by-law on America's West Coast. Convoy's not so much plot-driven as just driven. Fast. Preferably with 18 wheels and a bent towny cop a wing mirror away from your tailpipe.
So what happens? Sheriff Lyle Wallace (Dominic Santini from Airwolf) aka Cottonmouth, is said upstanding, prick-ass, bent towny cop. He hates truckers more than we hate Gok Wan's face and he's prepared to do more to upset their freeway frolics than just administer a few petty speeding fines. So when he attempts to arrest one of The Duck's crew on a 'bullshit vagrancy charge', after a gloriously naff slo-mo bar ruck we end up with the three renegade truckers making a break for the Mexican border with Wallace and half the cock-eyed Sheriff's department hot on their trails.
During the impending "chase", The Duck's burgeoning notoriety attracts like-minded long-haulers and a convoy starts to form. Three trucks suddenly turns into 50 in a mile-long convoy with everyone in attendance from the silver-haired Big Nasty to an open-topped mini-bus led by the hippy Reverend Sloane.
Why's it a classic? Signify 'Sam Peckinpah's descent into the irresponsible commercial tripe of the late 70s' it might, but that's why we like it. Sure, the plot may be weaker than a Gok Wan handshake, but the charismatic Kristofferson is in full-tilt as the inimitable Duck, and the 70s American fascination with trucker speak and the irresponsible 'give 'em the fucking finger' fantasies of the era makes Convoy as rewatchable as an internet mpeg of Gok Wan getting his ballsack torn off.
Get you and your girlfriend a set of CVs for Christmas. She'll love it.
